New international director at CIIR

Mary Garvey has joined the Catholic Institute for International Relations as international programmes director. She brings more than 20 years experiences to the organisation. Starting out as a maths teacher for Tibetan refugees in north India, she has worked in Botswana, setting up programmes for marginalised communities; she was country director in the Gambia, managing a volunteer programme for VSO (Voluntary Service Overseas), and researched and advised on policy for Christian Aid. HIV/AIDS in Botswana had a big impact on Mary. With 38% of the population being affected, some of her friends and colleagues were also infected. This led her to take her recent post as a senior policy adviser for HIV/AIDS at Christian Aid. She conducted research into sex education and HIV education among young people. Along with a bachelor's degree in Maths from Liverpool and a post-graduate certificate in Education from St Mary's college, Twickenham she recently completed a master's in development management. Mary will be responsible for planning and analysing CIIR's main themes of work. She will be devising better methods for integrating them in CIIR's programmes and for evaluating their impact. She said: "I am excited about starting my new job. CIIR is going through exciting changes and I have the opportunity to assist in eradicating poverty through my management, policy and advocacy experience..
