Catholic programmes on the BBC

During his meeting with the Director of BBC News, Mr Richard Sambrook, on Tuesday, the Most Reverend Vincent Nichols, Archbishop of Birmingham, was given the following list of forthcoming BBC religious broadcasting and programmes to mark the Silver Jubilee of Pope John Paul II on Thursday 16 October, and the Beatification of Mother Teresa on Sunday 19 October: Sunday 12 October - Good Morning Sunday (BBC Radio 2), 7.00am To celebrate the Silver Jubilee of Pope John Paul II, Don Maclean welcomes Archbishop Michael Fitzgerald and Peter Nowak from the Polish Centre in Hammersmith. Pope John Paul II has always stressed the need for respect and understanding between different religions. Earlier this year, he called on Catholics to 'hold out the hand of friendship' to other faiths. Archbishop Michael Fitzgerald talks to Don about his role as President of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue. Peter Nowak was taught theology by Pope John Paul at the University of Lublin in the Seventies. Nowak talks to Don about his experiences of learning from the Pope and how Polish communities will celebrate this special anniversary. Also this week, Bishop Howard Tripp, Auxiliary Bishop in Southwark Diocese, joins Don in the studio. Sunday (BBC Radio 4), 7.10am A feature profiling John Paul II. Sunday Worship (BBC Radio 4), 8.07am This service will mark the start of the Jubilee celebrations. Coming from the Maria Assumpta Chapel at Heythrop College, the harvest service is led by Fr James Hanvey. Monday 13 October - Friday 17 October Prayer for the Day (BBC Radio 4), 5.43am Throughout the week Bishop George Stack, Auxiliary Bishop of Westminster will be giving the Prayer for the Day. Wednesday 16 October Thought for the Day (BBC Radio 4), and Pause for Thought (BBC Radio 2) will both reflect the Anniversary on the 16 October. Daily Service (BBC Radio 4 LW), 9.45am A special Daily Service marking the Anniversary live from the Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King in Liverpool. Choral Evensong (BBC Radio 3), 4.00pm Live from the London Oratory and marks both the Jubilee and the Feast of St Teresa of Avila. Friday 17 October Act of Worship (BBC Radio 4 LW), 9.45am With Oliver McTernan Sunday 19 October The Pope's Silver Jubilee (BBC One), 10am Live coverage of events in Rome marking the 25th Anniversary of the election of Pope John Paul II. Brian Hanrahan in St Peter's Square will be joining Huw Edwards and studio guests to comment and reflect on the mood of a week of celebrations, which include a Mass for the Beatification of Mother Teresa of Calcutta. Songs of Praise (BBC One), 5.30pm The Pope's Silver Jubilee. Songs of Praise celebrates the 25th anniversary of the election Popes John Paul II with a programme looking back at his pontificate including his historic visit to Britain. Sunday (BBC Radio 4), 7.10am Co-presented by Edward Stourton in Manchester and Jane Little in Rome on the day of the Beatification of Mother Teresa. Sunday Worship (BBC Radio 4), 8.07am To mark the 25th Anniversary of His Holiness Pope John Paul II, there will be a Liturgy of the Word from St Leo the Great in Glasgow, to give thanks for his work. The service will be led by the Reverend Sean Fitzgerald, and Archbishop Mario Conti will give a personal appreciation of the faith and influence of the Holy Father. The service will also recollect the importance of the Pope's visit to Scotland and will include music originating in Scotland and sung by the Archdiocese of Glasgow's St Mungo Singers. Sunday Half Hour (BBC Radio 2), 8.30pm The programme will reflect the Anniversary in the prayers.
