Bristol: Rev Mgr Patrick McCoy has died


Mgr Patrick McCoy, a priest of the Diocese of Clifton, died on Saturday the 11 of October 2003.

Mgr McCoy was born on 28 March 1932 in County Limerick, Ireland. He studied for the priesthood at St Mary's College, Oscott and was ordained to the priesthood on 12 March 1960 at Clonliffe, Ireland by the Archbishop of Dublin.

His first appointment was to St Osmund's, Salisbury as Curate. A few years later he was appointed Curate at St Mary's, Bath where he stayed for five years.

In 1967 he moved to St George's, Taunton as Curate and in 1969 he moved away from the Diocese to study Social Science in London. On completion of his studies he was appointed curate at the Sacred Heart, Westbury-on-Trym, Bristol where he stayed for one year before being appointed Curate at St Bernadette's Whitchurch, Bristol.

In 1974 he took up his first appointment outside of the Diocese and became a lecturer in Social Science at the Coloma College of Education, West Wickham.

Then in 1979 he moved to St John's Seminary, Wonersh and lectured there. After seven years at Wonersh he took up the post of Vice Rector at The Beda College, Rome in September 1986.

While in Italy Fr McCoy was as appointed Chaplain to His Holiness Pope John Paul II in December 1988 giving him the title Monsignor.

In September 1993 Mgr McCoy became Parish Priest at St Augustine's, Downend, Bristol, and from May 1994 combined this parish work with the role of Diocesan Director of Diaconal Training.

In 1996 he moved to the United States and worked in California until his death on 11th October 2003.

Mgr Gabriel Leyden, Vicar General of the Diocese of Clifton, paid tribute to Mgr McCoy saying: "The news of Mgr McCoy's death has come as shock. He gave dedicated service to our Diocese and to the wider Church, especially in the training of priests, deacons and teachers. He will be sadly missed by his friends in England, Ireland and the United States".
