Christian groups to join week of peace rallies


Pax Christi, the Quakers, Christian CND, the Fellowship of Reconciliation and other Christian groups plan to take part in peaceful protests organised by the Stop the War Coalition during the visit of President George W Bush this week. A nonviolence training workshop and legal briefing will be taking place at 7pm this evening at the London Action Resource Centre (LARC), 62 Fieldgate Street (nearest tube Aldgate East). Tomorrow, (Tuesday 18 November) at 6pm, the Burning Planet march starts at Lincoln's Inn Fields (Holborn Tube). Campaigners will go past the ExxonMobil offices, Aldwych, through central London to the US embassy. At 7pm on Tuesday the Stop the War Coalition Rally takes place at Friends Meeting House, Euston Road. Speakers will include Ron Kovic and Tony Benn. On Wednesday, peace campaigners will be holding a vigil in Jubilee Gardens at 11am. At the same time school students will hold a rally in Parliament Square. On Thursday between 12.30 and 1.30pm, Pax Christi, the Quakers and Fellowship of Reconciliation will hold a silent vigil for peace in the North West corner of Trafalgar Square. Christian groups will also be joining the main Stop the War Demonstration on Thursday, which begins in Malet Street, London to finish at Trafalgar Square. On Friday at 11am campaigners will be calling for Geneva Convention rules to be upheld in the treatment of prisoners being kept at Guantanamo Bay in a protest outside the US Embassy, Grosvenor Square.
