Bishops launch agency to spread the Good News

A new national agency is being launched today in Westminster by the Bishops of England and Wales to support the Catholic community to share the Good News of Jesus Christ where they live and work. The Catholic Agency to Support Evangelisation (CASE) is the fruit of several years planning and has been created to support, train and resource Catholics from all walks of life to share and spread their faith. The Bishop of Clifton, Rt Rev Declan Lang, who chairs the Management Committee for CASE will welcome the keynote speaker Cardinal Danneels, Archbishop of Malines-Brussels at the launch in Westminster Cathedral Hall. The Agency will offer a range of training and resources to support parishes, communities, schools, groups and individuals in the vital work of proclaiming the message of Jesus Christ. A particular focus of CASE's work will be the promotion of dialogue between the Catholic faith and culture, as well as providing information on Catholic life and beliefs to enquirers through the running of the Catholic Enquiry Office. The four-strong CASE team have spent the last few months travelling across England and Wales to meet Church representatives and listen carefully to the needs of local Catholics. This initial consultation process will help shape to the development and expansion of the Agency's existing portfolio of services. Director of CASE, Mgr Keith Barltrop, said: "The Catholic Bishops have entrusted us with an exciting and challenging task. As a Catholic community we have such wonderful news to share. We truly believe that in the person of Jesus Christ every person's deepest needs and desires are fulfilled. In the months ahead, we look forward to helping the Catholic community to get that Good News proclaimed and heard." Bishop Declan said: "Pope Paul VI in his letter about the Church in the Modern World said very simply and clearly: 'The Church exists in order to evangelise'. Our Christian communities exist because we have heard the Good News proclaimed by Jesus and we wish to celebrate and share this Good News with other people. This means that as Christians we need to engage positively in the society of which we are part. Recognising the need to contribute to the common good; we have a special responsibility to those who feel powerless and forgotten". Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor said: "I congratulate everyone who has been involved in setting up CASE and wish it every success. Its work is the work of the whole Catholic community." CASE has a website with free resources and information about faith sharing strategies and programmes. The site, which can be found at www.caseresources.org, also provide information about new Catholic movements and communities, and offer prayer support and accompaniment for those involved in the work of evangelisation. The CASE team have also created an internet resource for non-Catholics at: www.life4seekers.co.uk If you would like information about the Catholic faith please contact: CASE, 114 West Heath Road, London NW3 7TX Tel: 020 8458 3316.
