Pope appoints English bishop to Rome synod

Pope Benedict XVI has appointed Bishop Arthur Roche of Leeds as a Synodal Father for the 11th Ordinary General Assembly of Synod of Bishops, which will be held in Rome from October 2 - 23. Bishop Roche is chairman of the International Commission for English in the Liturgy (ICEL). Created in 1963, ICEL is a joint enterprise of the Bishops' Conferences of Australia, Canada, England and Wales, India, Ireland, New Zealand, Pakistan, the Philippines, Scotland, Southern Africa, and the United States. Its aim is to help these conferences to develop the vernacular liturgy in light of the reform of the Roman Rite called for by the Second Vatican Council. Bishop Roche said: "I am very honoured, as Chairman of ICEL, to be asked by the Holy Father to participate in this important Synod on the Eucharist. It speaks of the regard in which ICEL is held and of the importance of its work in translating the Third Edition of the Roman Missal which will, in due course, follow the work of this Synod." The title of the synod is The Eucharist: Source and Summit of the Life and Mission of the Church. Also attending it will be the two elected delegates from the Catholic Bishops' Conference of England and Wales, Cardinal Cormac Murphy O'Connor of Westminster and Bishop Brian Noble of Shrewsbury.
