Clifton J&P Commission raise issues with MP

Stephen Williams, MP for Bristol West, met members of 'Our Common Future' this week to discuss the third issue of their 'Manifesto for the Planet', a document presented to parliamentary candidates during the election earlier this year. Our Common Future is a consortium of organisations and individuals concerned about peace, justice and the environment. The Clifton Diocese Justice and Peace Commission were represented by Moira McDowall and Sue Ingham. The meeting was called to ask the new Liberal Democrat MP how his party would influence the government on issues covered by the 'Manifesto'. With issues as diverse as global warming, recycling, aid and trade, the Iraq war, the Arms trade, human rights, poverty and the UN are included in the 'Manifesto' this was not an easy question. An interesting afternoon of discussion and more specific questions followed. Moira and Sue, as members of the Commission's Asylum group raised points about the absence of legal advice and representation on immigration available locally and how this impacts on individuals. Further related questions covered the quality of decision-making on asylum applications and the new Asylum bill currently moving through Parliament. As a follow-up to the meeting Mr Williams has agreed to take up specific points raised at the meeting with the relevant minister. Sue Ingham is Secretary of Clifton Diocese Justice & Peace Commission
