Leeds: Newman Postulator addresses Bishops' Conference
A progress report on the Cause for the beatification and canonization of the Venerable John Henry Cardinal Newman was given to the bishops of England and Wales yesterday. The Postulator, Fr Paul Chavasse, Provost of the Birmingham Oratory, addressed the bishops and answered questions about the Newman Cause during the first day of their autumn meeting in Leeds. Meanwhile, Fr Chavasse, accompanied by Peter Jennings, editor of 'Benedict XVI and Cardinal Newman', met with the Apostolic Nuncio to Great Britain, Archbishop Faustino Sainz Munoz, at the Apostolic Nunciature in Wimbledon, on Friday 11 November. There has been worldwide media interest in the Newman Cause since 17 October, when Fr Chavasse first revealed details of the Diocesan Tribunal set up in the Archdiocese of Boston to investigate a possible miracle attributed to Cardinal Newman. The Tribunal completes its work on 7 February 2006 and the papers will then be sent to Rome where the evidence will be meticulously scrutinized by doctors and theologians appointed by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints.
