Catholic Church in Orkney hit by floods

The Catholic Church in Kirkwall has been one of the casualties of the severe storm and floods which hit Orkney last Thursday. The Church dedicated to Our Lady and St Joseph, the only Catholic Church in Orkney, and its adjoining presbytery were flooded when no less than three inches of rain descended on Orkney's capital. The Church and presbytery are closed until further notice. Mass last Sunday was celebrated in the Guide Hall in School Place, next to the Council offices in Kirkwall. The local Fire Brigade pumped out all the water and also had to make a hole to pump water from the foundations of the building. A group of volunteers helped Parish Priest Fr John Allen to disconnect all electrical equipment and lift all the carpets to reveal sodden wooden floors. Source: Diocese of Aberdeen
