Liverpool: appeal for memorabilia from 'cathedral that never was'

The Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, is preparing an exhibition of the magnificent wooden model showing the Metropolitan Cathedral designed for Liverpool by the renowned architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, but never built. After a long period of conservation work, the model will go on display from January 27th until April 22nd 2007. Accompanying the model will be photographs and memorabilia about the plan to build a new Cathedral. However there is still one key item the museum would like for their exhibition. Curator Julian Treuherz is trying to trace one of the tin collecting boxes used to raise money for the Cathedral Building Fund. There is one on show in the Cathedral Crypt, but he would like to find another to display in the exhibition. If anyone has a collecting box, or any other artefact connected with the Lutyens Cathedral, Julian would be delighted to hear from you. His colleagues working on the new Museum of Liverpool are also collecting memories and stories about the Cathedral, including the laying of the Foundation Stone and the building of the crypt. If you can help, please contact Julian Treuherz at the Walker Art Gallery, William Brown Street, Liverpool, L3 8EL, or email Julian.Treuherz@liverpoolmuseums.org.uk.
