Westminster: prayer vigil planned as MPs prepare to vote on Trident
Peace campaigners from around the UK will be gathering in Westminster this Wednesday, as MPs debate and vote on the replacement of the Trident nuclear weapon system. A national lobby will take place outside the Houses of Parliament from 1pm. An hour-long silent prayer vigil, organised by the Anglican Pacifist Fellowship, Fellowship of Reconciliation, CCND and Pax Christi will begin outside Westminster Abbey at 5pm. Church leaders in England, Scotland and Wales, have all spoken clearly against the replacement of Trident. In January 2006, Pope Benedict XVI said that government policies that rely on nuclear weapons as a means of ensuring security are "baneful and also completely fallacious".
