Cardinal Cormac comments on PM's resignation today

Following Prime Minister Tony Blair's announcement of his resignation, Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor issued the following statement: "The role of prime minister is an extremely demanding one in today's complex society. It is not for me to comment on all of Tony Blair's policies, though one recognises the serious divisions of opinion on the war in Iraq. History will make a better judgement than today. "For my part, I want to recognise and thank Tony Blair for his dedication and whole-hearted commitment to the service of his country. In particular, I would warmly commend his efforts in securing peace in Northern Ireland and his constant concern for the eradication of poverty in Africa. "I would like to extend my good wishes and prayers for Tony Blair, his wife Cherie and family in their future." Source: Archbishops House
