Archbishop Desmond Tutu calls for resignation of Robert Mugabe
Archbishop Desmond Tutu called for the resignation of Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe, during a service at St Martin-in-the-Fields in Trafalgar Square, London, last night. He said: "Mugabe began so well more than 20 years ago. We all had such high hopes.... But his his regime has turned into a horrendous nightmare. He should stand down." Archbishop Tutu also appealed for UN peacekeepers to go to Zimbabwe to supervise the forthcoming run-off election for the presidency, due to take place on 27 June. The Nobel Peace Prize laureate was taking part in prayers for peace in a new underground light well and room which has been named after him. During the service there was a blessing of three Zimbabwean sculptures, standing in the entrance of the new Dick Sheppard Chapel.
