Walking in the steps of St Edmund Campion

Source: Knights of St Columba

In 1966, the Knights of Saint Columba began a long association with a Pilgrimage which involves a relic of St Edmund Campion being carried along the route of the Saint's final journey from Lyford Grange where he was arrested, to the chapel at Stonor Park where he had his printing press, near Henley in Oxfordshire, to Tyburn Convent, close to Marble Arch in London. The Westminster Central Province 11 events have already taken place and many Massgoers have taken the opportunity to venerate the Relic at churches in Stamford Hill, Kingsland, Highgate, Acton, Upper Holloway, Marylebone, Kilburn, West Ealing and Willesden Green.

For two weeks, from From Monday 21 July, it will be the turn of Westminster Western Province 30, to take the relic to parishes in Hanwell, Uxbridge, Kenton, Wealdstone, North Harrow and Hayes. Details of times of services may be obtained from Jim Keating on 020 8848 9216 or by email from Martin D'Cunha at martin.bobby@talktalk.net.

In September and early October Thames Valley Province 23 will take the relic to parishes in Reading, Wokingham, Bracknell, Ascot, Sunningdale, Burnham, Staines and Slough. For further details contact David Sole at david_sole@hotmail.com or contact John Lynn on 01628-636668.

St Edmund Campion was a Jesuit priest and martyr. Known as the London Saint, he was born in London in 1540 and executed at Tyburn on 1 December 1581 where he was hung, drawn and quartered. His only offence was his religion. By his death was lost a brilliant thinker and literary stylist comparable to any in the Elizabethan age.

The original idea of the St Edmund Campion Pilgrimage was that it should keep going until the "Forty Martyrs " were canonised by Pope Paul VI in 1970, the Knights decided to continue the Pilgrimage.

After more than 40 years the Knights of St Columba have every reason to regard this Pilgrimage as their own, and are most happy to invite other individuals and groups to join them in the summer months of this and every year. One organization which has taken up this invitation in a big way in 2008 is the Catenian Association, which is celebrating its centenary this year.

The Catenians are holding a series of weekend pilgrimages carrying the Relic along roads which the Saint himself walked. These events are taking place in parallel with the Knights' pilgrimage and there will be frequent points of intersection.

A number have already been completed. After the summer recess the schedule is as follows: Saturday 13 September Stonor to Henley-on-Thames (Mass 6pm); Sunday 21 September Henley to Marlow (Mass 5.30pm); Saturday 27 September Marlow to Maidenhead (Mass 6.15pm); Saturday 4 October Maidenhead to Windsor (Mass 6pm); Sunday 12 October Windsor to Langley (Mass 5.30pm); Sunday 19 October Langley to West Drayton (Mass 6pm); Saturday 25 October West Drayton to Hayes (Mass 6.30pm); Sunday 2 November Hayes to Ealing Abbey (Mass 12 noon); Saturday 22 November Ealing Abbey to Kensington (Mass 6pm). On the final day, Sunday 30 November, the programme will be as follows: 9.30am Walk from Kensington to Tyburn Convent. 10.15am Visit to the Martyrs' Chapel at Tyburn Convent. 11am Walk from Tyburn to Farm Street. 12.30pm Mass at Immaculate Conception, Farm Street. 4pm Final Mass at Tyburn Convent.

All are welcome to attend these events.
