Fr Timothy Radcliffe backs Student Cross pilgrims

Pilgrims are limbering up once again for Britain's oldest annual pilgrimage, Student Cross. After the Diamond Jubilee of Student Cross in 2008, eager pilgrims anticipate another week of joy and no few blisters, of friendships forged for life and liturgy as never experienced before.

From 4-12 April, over 250 people of all ages will set out on their journeys from various parts of England in 10 groups (known as "Legs"). They will walk around 120 miles during the course of the week carrying a cross and gather together in Walsingham on Good Friday for a unique Easter celebration.

The Student Cross Diamond Jubilee celebrations included keynote speaker Fr Timothy Radcliffe OP (former Master of the Dominican Order). Student Cross, suggested Fr Radcliffe, is about 'unity in difference'. Speaking of how being an individual relates to one's experience of community, he said that the pilgrimage is 'not a sentimental sense of oneness but a discovery of who you are by being in communion with those who are different.'

Felicity Cairns, Student Cross national director for 2009, said: 'If anyone is looking for a unique way to celebrate Easter and experience fully the community of pilgrimage then Student Cross is for them!'
