The Church and dialogue with Science

Today, scientists will be attempting to discover more about the origins of the Universe by recreating the aftermath of the Big Bang. Engineers will attempt to circulate a beam of particles around the 27km-long underground tunnel which houses the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The collider is operated by the European Organization for Nuclear Research - better known by its French acronym CERN. The vast circular tunnel which runs under the French-Swiss border contains more than 1,000 cylindrical magnets arranged end-to-end.

The experiment is one of the most complex and significant of modern times - and one that raises a lot of questions.

In Thinking Faith, the great potential for dialogue between religion and science is explored by John Moffatt SJ, in his keynote lectures from the 2008 Living Theology summer school at Ushaw College, Durham. Read >> www.thinkingfaith.org/articles/20080909_1.htm
