Retrial for priest murder
A former secret service general has been recharged with the murder of Solidarity priest Fr Jerzy Popieluszko in 1984. General Wladyslaw Ciaston is accused of ordering police agents to kill Father Jerzy. The former general was acquitted of the murder six years ago, but an appeals court ordered a retrial. Three police officers have already been convicted of the murder. Polish press reports say prosecutors began pursuing charges against higher-ranking officers in the case as part of Poland's effort to exact justice for past communist crimes.
