Fides new service has compiled a dossier on the subject of human organ transplants and the growing illegal trade in human organs around the world. In Europe, 60,000 people are currently awaiting transplants. Ten people die each day from a lack of organ supply. But commercialization of the service is leading to increasing abuses. Statistics from the WHO show that an estimated 10% of kidney transplants performed worldwide in 2007 were illegal.
