Burundi: kidnapped bishop free


The Bishop of Burundi, Mgr Joseph Nduhirubusa, kidnapped on 18 May was freed around 10 o'clock this morning, local time, by FDD rebels (Forces for the Defence of Democracy) The missionary news service report that the Apostolic Nuncio in Bujumbura, Bishop Michael Aidan Courtney was present at the release. He said: "I personally went to the appointment decided with the rebels in a village near the city of Bubanza. Bishop Nduhirubusa is in good condition though he is very tired since he has been on the run for five days. We returned together to Bujumbura and I must admit that everything took place without any problems, all respected the reached accords, both the rebels and government". The bishop is now resting in the residence of the Apostolic nunciature of the Burundian capital. to Burundi announced yesterday that the Bishop of Ruyigi in Burundi, Joseph Nduhirubusa, was going to be released by his kidnappers at 9am this morning. Speaking from Bujumbura, to the missionary news service, Bishop Michael Aidan Courtney, said he was going to personally meet with the rebels.
