CAFOD welcomes G8 debt relief - but it is not enough
Catholic Aid Agency CAFOD welcomes the news that the G8 have agreed to grant an extra one billion dollars in debt relief. However it cautions this move does not meet the needs set out by the Africans in the New Partnerships for Africa's Development (NEPAD) proposals. CAFOD Africa policy analyst Henry Northover said: "This is progress but not the breakthrough the Africans were hoping for. They were looking for enough debt relief to finance their costed poverty reduction programmes. In order to meet the 2015 millennium development goals most African countries will need 100% debt write-offs."
