Kenya: Archbishop demands new president be chosen by voters

The Archbishop of Mombasa has reminded Kenya's power brokers that the country's voters must have the last word on the selection of their new President. Current Head of state President Daniel arap Moi has indicated his choice of successor as 41 year old Urhuru Kenyatta, current Minister of the local government and son of the country's first president Jomo Kenyatta. Following the outgoing President's announcement, the Archbishop, Monsignor John Njenga, issued a public statement reminding Mr Moi that he had a right to make his choice of as a Kenyan citizen just as all Kenyans do. "The Kenyan people will make the definitive choice of candidate based on the political programmes on issues such as the economy, education, security and agriculture," commented Archbishop Njenga. With 60 per cent of the population living in poverty, Kenya is still viewed as a nation which is progressively worsening. President Moi is due to leave office at the end of the year.
