Kenya: robbers kill priest

A Kenyan priest died in a Nairobi hospital of gunshot wounds on Friday, a week after being attacked by robbers. Fr Martin Macharia Njoroge, was travelling in his car when some bandits pulled him over in the outskirts of the Kenyan capital. "After dragging him from his car they shot him four times at close range", the Bishop of Nairobi, Archbishop Raphael Ndingi Mwana'a Nzeki told the Missionary News Service. "He did not resist them, but apparently even handed over the keys to his car, which the bandits left 500 metres away. His body was left on the ground, then found by a 'good Samaritan' who took him to the hospital". Fr Martin arrived at Nairobi's Agha Khan Hospital with two bullets in his lungs, one in his right leg and another in his chin. After a few days three bullets dislodged, while a fourth, in his left lung, had to be removed surgically, but Fr Martin died on the operating table. "Padre Martin died from a cardio-circulatory arrest during the operation", the Archbishop said. Fr Martin was ordained priest only four years ago and served at the St Francis Xaverian parish of Parklands, in Nairobi. His death is another terrible loss for his family and the diocese. Six priests have met violent deaths in the archdiocese of Nairobi in recent years. The Kenyan government of Mwai Kibaki has just opened an inquiry into the mysterious shooting of Fr John Anthony Kaiser, missionary of the St Joseph Mill Hill Society, who was found dead 24 August 2000 near Lake Naivasha. Fr John was known for his campaigning and work for the poor.
