Catholic team wins UEFA Cup

Portuguese football club FC Porto, visitors to Pope Jean Paul II in Rome at the semi- final stage of the UEFA Cup, have beaten a spirited Celtic FC side to claim the Cup in Seville, Spain.

At 2-2 before extra time, last night, Porto's Brazilian player Derlein finished as the competition's top scorer - ahead of the Dane Henrik Larsson - by scoring Porto's winning goal to give this year's Portuguese championship winners their second European title after a wait of 16 years.

FC Porto visited the Pope before the UEFA Cup semi-final tie against SS Lazio of Rome. Celtic, the Glasgow club founded by Catholic priests in the nineteenth century, were appearing in their first European final in twenty five years. `
