Salesians launch radio station in Solomon Islands

A new Catholic broadcaster is sending the Word of God across the Pacific. Radio Bosco is the name of a Catholic radio station launched by the Salesian Fathers in Solomon Islands. The radio commenced its broadcasts on 27 February in the presence of Father Luciano Capelli SDB, superior of the Salesian Solomons Province. Fr Ambrose Pereira SDB head of communications for Honiara diocese, together with Italian volunteers and many friends and parishioners. Building community, empowering people is the slogan of the Community Radio station. It will strive to focus on issues of education, health, women, youth and communities issues - as it shares news, views, events and stories in the life of the people in its daily broadcast. Situated at the Don Bosco Tetere, the radio station is in the midst of the Religious Training Centre for boys and girls, the parish, the health centre, school, prison and villages around the plantation. "This is one more dream fulfilled and we are grateful for the gift and we ask the Lord to bless us and the volunteers who trust us and believe in what we do for the good of our people" Fr Capelli told Fides. The radio was built and launched thanks to contributions by engineers and other experts. Part of the material was donated by Italian volunteers who work regularly in Solomon Islands. "We hope Radio Bosco will fulfil its role of education, information and entertainment. It will also broadcast a daily Mass" Fr Ambrose said. Source: Fides
