Zambia: Church to establish university

The Catholic Church in Zambia have announced plans to set up a university in the country. Currently the Church provides primary, secondary and college levels. On March 11 a historical lease agreement was signed between the Chamber of Mines and Zambia Episcopal Conference (ZEC). The day started with a celebration of Mass at Kalulushi buildings, which will house the administration of the proposed Zambia Catholic University (ZCU). The signing ceremony was presided over by the ZEC Bishop Director for Education, Archbishop James Spaita, who also doubles up as the Archbishop of Kasama. The University will be open to everyone, and run on a Federal System. Kalulushi will house the initial administration as well as a few academic programmes. "Once the renovations are done, we expect to open our doors to the first students by September 2006," said Archbishop Spaita. Given the high costs of building a whole university complex, ZEC decided on starting the University in a modest manner. Hence, existing structures that could be rented (or bought) as a start-up measure were sought for, and that is how it all ended up at Kalulushi. The Zambia Catholic University will have at the core of its mission the promotion of Gospel values and Christian ethics. It will endeavour to provide holistic formation by disseminating knowledge and truth through teaching, learning, scholarship, and rigourous research. "The Catholic Bishops have always emphasized the responsibility of providing high quality education as part of the mission of the Church," noted Archbishop Spaita. The University hopes in this regard to contribute to the formation of graduates who will be citizens driven by values of integrity, compassion, and social justice.
