Southern Africa: religious condemn human trafficking

The Leadership Conference of Consecrated Life in Southern Africa (LCCL-SA) has condemned human trafficking and expressed support for efforts that respect human dignity. "We note with deep concern the widespread illegal trafficking of women and children, a contemporary form of slavery," LCCL-SA said on May 4, 2005 after their annual general meeting held at Sizanani, Bronkhorstspruit, Pretoria. "We urge members of different groups, together with government and international nongovernmental organizations, to expose, condemn and help put a stop to this gross crime against human dignity," they said. The LCCL-SA is an association of 75 Congregations of Roman Catholic Religious Sisters and 35 Congregations of Priests and Brothers. Suggesting that the mission of the Church should include "theological study and ongoing work among the poor and marginalized, particularly among those with HIV/AIDS", the Conference said its members "live in communities, which must be places of hope, healing and openness to others." The Conference offered its support to the Religious in England and Wales who are preparing to lobby Britain's parliament on May 18 to 'Make Poverty History' in poor countries and introduce greater fairness in the global economy.
