Author of 'God's Architect' to talk at St Edmund's College

Rosemary Hill, author of 'God's Architect' will give a talk at St Edmund's College, near Ware in Hertfordshire, on Tuesday 11 November at 7.30pm in the Chapel.

Rosemary's book is the first full biography of the great architect, designer and inventor of the Gothic Revival in England, Augustus Welby Pugin. The St Edmund's College Chapel, started in 1846 and finished in 1853, was designed by Pugin, so the talk has a special relevance. On display will be Pugin's original architectural drawings.

Pugin was one of Britain's most important architects and his short career one of the most dramatic in architectural history. He was born in London i 1812, and by the time he was 21, he had been bankrupted, shipwrecked and widowed. He died 19 years later, insane and disillusioned at the age of 40, having changed the face and the mind of British architecture. In just three years before he was thirty, he built 22 churches, three cathedrals, three convents, several schools and a Cistercian monastery. Later he gave Britain's cities two of their greatest landmarks, the clocktower of the Palace of Westminster and, in Edinburgh, the spire of Tolbooth St John's.

Rosemary Hill's biography, published in paperback in August 2008, draws on thousands of unpublished letters, bringing together material that since his death had been scattered round the world. The book puts Pugin back together again, viewing him in the round - as architect, propagandist and, Catholic and romantic artist. After the talk, Rosemary will be available to sign copies of the book.

The event is being co-hosted with books@hoddesdon as part of their 'Meet the Author' series and tickets are available for £8 each. For further details and to purchase tickets, please call the College on 01920 821504.
