Cardinal congratulates new papal nuncio to Egypt

The Archbishop of Westminster has congratulated Archbishop Michael Fitzgerald on his appointment as papal nuncio in Egypt. The 68-year-old Englishman was head of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue in Rome. Archbishop Fitzgerald is one of the Church's leading experts on Islam. Cairo is home to the Al-Azhar University and Mosque. Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor said: "I would like to congratulate Archbishop Michael Fitzgerald on his new appointment as Apostolic Nuncio in Egypt as well as being the Holy See's delegate to the League of Arab States. The Church is fortunate indeed in having someone of his expertise and prestige in this sensitive post. I would like to express their gratitude to Archbishop Michael for all he has achieved as president of the Pontifical Council for Inter-religious Dialogue in these past years."
