Cardinal opens new archives at the English College in Rome

Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, Archivist of the Vatican Secret Archives and Librarian of the Holy Roman Church, formerly opened the Archives and Third Library of the Venerable English College in Rome during a short ceremony last Monday, writes Peter Jennings. Cardinal Tauran said: "When you possess good archives, when you enjoy a good library, it means you believe in your future." Addressing the students the French cardinal said: "This College is a link in a long chain. Dear students of today, you have the privilege to be a bridge between yesterday and tomorrow. Draw from this unique heritage which so often speaks about the courage and the perseverance of the English Catholics, inspiration for your service to the Church." Archbishop Vincent Nichols, Chairman of the Trustees, said afterwards: "The renovations that have been achieved in the last year will delight all former students of the College and archivists everywhere. We are indeed proud of our history and full of hope for our future." The work on the Archives and the Third Library has been supported by a generous donation from Mr and Mrs Urs Schwarzenbach, parishioners of the Sacred Heart Church, Henley-on-Thames.
