Vatican reinstates council for interfaith dialogue

The Pontifical Council for Inter-religious Dialogue, which was merged with the Vatican Council for Culture last year, is to be restored in its own right, the Vatican's Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone has announced. Further details will be released soon. Commentators point out that it is unusual for the Vatican to reverse a decision of this kind. At the time of the merger, archbishop Michael Fitzgerald, one of the Catholic Church's most experienced figures in dialogue with Islam, was sent to Cairo. Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone told Italian daily, La Stampa: "The change highlights the importance of inter-religious dialogue." Source: VIS/CCN
