Dying for Water by Sean McDonagh
Many of the wars of the twentieth century were about oil. But wars of the twenty-first century will be about water.
This is one of the predictions in Fr Sean McDonagh's timely book about the precious resource of water. The Columban missionary priest warns that water scarcity is contributing to food insecurity and heightened competition for water both within and between countries.
By 2025 - just a generation away - 40 per cent of the world's people may be living in countries experiencing water stress or chronic water scarcity. He documents how human activity is polluting water in rivers, aquifers, lakes and the oceans around the world.
Religious leaders are urged to engage with water issues in their countries and assist civil society in its calls for water protection.
"Working to protect water and make sure that it is available freely to everyone on the planet is following in the way of Jesus in our world today," concludes Fr McDonagh.
