Obituary: Father Michael Walsh


Father Michael Walsh died on the evening of Friday, 7th November, 2008. Father Walsh was in his sixty-third year, the fortieth year of his Sacred Priesthood. May he rest in peace.


Michael Walsh was born in Bury, Lancashire on 22nd November, 1944. He was Baptised at St Joseph's, Bury and Confirmed at Guardian Angels, Bury. He was educated at Thornleigh College, Bolton. He was accepted as an ecclesiastical student for the Diocese of Salford in June 1961 and began his
studies at St Bede's College before transferring to Ushaw College, Durham, in 1963. He was ordained to the Sacred Priesthood at Guardian Angels, Bury on 1st March 1969 by Bishop Geoffrey Burke.

Father Walsh served the Diocese in the following appointments:
As Assistant Priest:
1969 July St Peter's, Middleton.
1972 September St James', Pendleton.
1979 October Our Lady and St Paul's, Heywood.
1985 St Joseph's, Longsight.

Chaplain to Xaverian Sixth Form College.

As Parish Priest:
1986 St Willibrord's, Clayton.
1991 St Paul's, Guide Bridge.

Father Walsh was a Trustee of the Salford Roman Catholic Diocesan Trust, member of the Diocesan Board of Administration, and was Dean of St. Teresa of Avila Deanery. He was the Diocesan Communications Officer and Chairman of the National Diocesan Communications Officers' Panel. He
was also the Media Advisor to the Child Protection Commission and the Bishop's representative on the Manchester Council of Christians and Jews.

Funeral arrangements:

Father Walsh's body will be received into the Church of St Paul, Guide Bridge for concelebrated Mass on Tuesday, 18 November at 7pm.
The Requiem Mass will be offered by Bishop Brain, on Wednesday, 19 November at 11am in the Church of St Paul, Guide Bridge. His mortal remains will be buried in the family grave in Bury Cemetery.

Reverend Monsignor Canon Mark Davies, Vicar General of the Salford Diocese, said: "Fr Michael's death was a great shock to us all. He will be greatly missed because of everything that he did for the Salford diocese in so many capacities."

"We give thanks for his 39 years of service to the Church in the Greater Manchester area. He's left a great gap for us in all that he did."
