The guardian of Nyalenda parish, a slum in the city of Kisumu, in the center-west of Kenya, on Lake Victoria, was killed in a robbery in the night between 18 and 19 March. George Omondi, 47, father of five, was shot several times in the head and neck by bandits who were trying to enter Fr George Kraakman's house, a Dutch Mill Hill missionary.
Fr George woke up due to the noise, and found Omondi in a pool of blood. He was rushed to hospital, but pronounced dead on arrival.
The bandits stole food from the refrigerator, but apparently did no other damage. Police have recently intensified their control in the area where there has been an increase in violent crimes.
The famine that is affecting East Africa is having an impact in Kenya, that sees half of its territory affected by drought.
President Uhuru Kenyatta has decided to deploy the army in the counties of Laikipia and Baringo, in the Rift Valley, to support the police as they try to stop the violence between farmers and herders that since February has claimed at least 21 dead.
