Sheffield: Polish celebrity attracts crowds to Cathedral

The visit of an Englishman turned Polish celebrity attracted hundreds of people to Sheffield's St Marie's Cathedral yesterday.

Chelsea born fire fighter Kevin Aiston is a well-known star in Poland after a host of TV and radio appearances in the eastern European country since moving there in 1991.

Kevin was invited to the region by the South Yorkshire Joint Authorities to attend the 'Feel safe know your community' event which was staged at the Cathedral.

The day offered newcomers from Eastern Europe, who are now residing in South Yorkshire, the opportunity to gain information about services available to them.

Kevin, who continues to mix his career as a fire fighter with his pubic status in Poland, said: "I was delighted to be invited and help raise awareness of this event. It was great to see so many people there and the work that is being done to make people aware of the services available to them.

"I know from my own experience that moving to a new country can be a daunting thing, learning different cultures and ways of working. But I also know that it can give someone a massive opportunity to improve their life."

The event started after the weekly Polish Mass celebrated by Fr Andrzej Pyster, which was attended by the Sheffield Lord Mayor Cllr Jane Bird and Fr Chris Posuszny, the Dean at St Marie's Cathedral, whose family originally came from Poland.

Stalls from the Police, Fire and Rescue, Sheffield City Council, the Joint Authorities, What's on in Sheffield, the National Health Service and Sheffield Homes all provided free advice on how to stay safe in South Yorkshire.
