A spokesman for the Royal Family announced yesterday that Kate Middleton has been confirmed in the Church of England. He said: "Catherine Middleton was confirmed by the Bishop of London at a private service at St James's Palace attended by her family and Prince William. Miss Middleton, who was already baptised, decided to be confirmed as part of her marriage preparations."

The ceremony means that she will be able to receive Communion with Prince William at their wedding service.

The Rt Rev Richard Chartres, the Bishop of London, family who will preach at the Royal Wedding on 29 April, also confirmed Prince William, when he was 14, in 1997 at St George's Chapel, Windsor.

When Prince William becomes King, he will have the title: Supreme Governor of the Church of England.
