Campaign to save Religious Education

The English Baccalaureate (EBacc) was introduced in 2010 and is awarded to all students who achieve GCSEs at grades A*-C in English, Mathematics, Science, a Humanities subject and a Modern Foreign Language.

However, the list of recognised Humanities subjects does not currently include Religious Education. A campaign has been set up to urge the government to ensure that RE be regarded as a humanity for the purposes of the English Baccalaureate.

What you can do

1. .Urge your MP to sign EDM 1375 which supports the inclusion of RE in the English Baccalaureate - there were 36 signatures on 6 March and more are needed - see: www.parliament.uk/edm/2010-11/1375

2. If your MP has already signed the EDM or on principle will not be signing, then write to your MP to explain the urgency of the matter and ask them to write to Michael Gove asking him to add RE to the EBacc. If your MP has a surgery during March - attend the surgery and explain the situation face-to-face. Those who have done this already have found it takes up perhaps an hour of their time overall, and very helpful. Text to help you with the letter is in the document is attached at the bottom of this page - but do make it your own, add your own thoughts and experience, as this has more impact than a copied letter.

3. Forward this news item to anyone you know who would be able to take any of the actions listed here - they don’t have to be secondary teachers or MPs - just someone in the community who is concerned about the place of RE in our schools.

The campaign is also on Twitter! Use the hashtag #EDM1375 to join the conversation about the Early Day Motion, or #EBacc to tweet about the English Baccalaureate in general.
