Irish Council for Prisoners Overseas launches anniversary film

The Irish Council for Prisoners Overseas has embraced new technology by launching a special 25th anniversary video charting the history of the charity.

The ICPO is part of the Irish Chaplaincy in Britain and is run under the auspices of the Irish Bishops's Council, celebrated its 25th year working with vulnerable Irish prisoners in 2010, and launched the video, which can be found on the charities website, to mark the occasion.

Among those seen reminiscing on the video are founders and early employees of the service, and one of the charities earliest users, Billy Power, who was a member of the Birmingham Six, and whose case was among the first miscarriages' of justice highlighted by the ICPO.

The video aims to bring the work for the ICPO to a new audience, and bring to light the issues faced by a new generation of vulnerable Irish prisoners in Britain.

Speaking about the charity's latest initiative ICPO project manager Fr Gerry McFlynn said: "The video is a fitting tribute to the vision, dedication, and sheer hard work of the many people who, over the last twenty five years, have sought to transform the lives of prisoners, from their current existences of quiet desperation, and to offer support and hope for the future.
