Rediscovery of a masterpiece - lecture on restoration of Giotto Crucifix

Fra Giotto's Ognissanti Crucifix

Fra Giotto's Ognissanti Crucifix

Giotto's 14th century Ognissanti Crucifix is one of the most well-known Catholic images, but over the centuries it has become obscured by layers of ingrained dust. Recently it was restored to its former glory by an expert team from the Opificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence.

Art historian and restorer Anna-Marie Hilling, will be giving a lecture on the project in Holy Apostles Church, Winchester Street, Pimlico, London, on Tuesday 8 March 2011 at 7pm.

The restoration of the Crucifix involved state-of-the-art techniques such as the X-radiograph and Infrared reflectography - which revealed many secrets about the techniques and materials used, and the identity of the artists.

Anna-Marie will examine the incredible mastery and craftsmanship that went into every single layer of the painting on panel - from the wooden support, to the gilding, the paint layers, and even the insertion of gilded and painted glass in Christ's halo.

Anna-Marie Hilling studied restoration of paintings in the historical conservation laboratories of the Opificio delle Pietre Dure, Florence and is an authority of the work of Fra Angelico.

Admission free. There will be a retiring collection in aid of twinned Parish in Turkana, Kenya.
