Jesuits unveil Christmas Card for Mayfair

Adoration of the Shepherds by Castiglione

Adoration of the Shepherds by Castiglione

Farm Street Church in central London has unveiled its annual 'Christmas Card for Mayfair'. The floodlit mural on the side of the building has become a regular feature for residents, shoppers and passers-by, reminding them of the real meaning of Christmas.

This year's painting is The Adoration of the Shepherds by Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, an Italian artist of the Baroque period. Most of his works show the journeys of the Old Testament patriarchs, including Noah, Abraham and Isaac. But he also chose themes from Classical mythology and the lives of the saints.

The Adoration of the Shepherds was painted in oil on copper in 1659. It currently hangs in the Musée du Louvre, Paris.

The Farm Street mural can be seen as far away as Oxford Street, where shoppers in their thousand are surrounded by bright lights, window displays and tempting Christmas presents. The Jesuits of Mayfair hope that the 'Christmas Card' showing the Nativity will remind them of the deeper meaning of the season.
