Deacon Gerard Hatton - latest to be ordained for Arundel and Brighton

Three new priests are being ordained for the Diocese of Arundel and Brighton in the new year. Bishop Kieran will ordain Alex Hill, Kevin O’Donnell and Gerard Hatton in January and February. Last month Bishop Kieran ordained Alex Hill and Kevin O'Donnell as Deacons. They are both former Anglicans, married with children. Deacon Gerard Hatton was ordained deacon in June.

The first to be ordained is Deacon Alex Hill on Saturday, 15 January at St Joseph’s, Guildford at midday. A fortnight later it is the turn of Deacon Kevin O’Donnell on Saturday 29 January at Sacred Heart, Hove at 12pm. Finally Deacon Gerard Hatton will be ordained priest on Tuesday 1 February at 7pm at St Joseph’s, Redhill. He recently assisted the Pope during Benediction in Hyde Park.

Deacon Alex continues to serve in West Byfleet, Deacon Kevin in Dorking and Deacon Gerard in Weybridge until their Priestly ordinations next year when they will take up new pastoral duties elsewhere in the Diocese.

There are currently five other men training for the priesthood for the Diocese both at Wonersh, near Guildford and at the English College in Rome.

At their annual conference held last week at Oscott seminary in Birmingham, the Vocations Directors discussed the approaches to vocations work that have contributed to this increase. Many dioceses and religious orders now run discernment groups such as the Samuel Groups for young men and women which encourage lay, religious and priestly vocations.

Fr Christopher Jamison, who recently became Director of the National Office of Vocation, commented: “When everybody in the Church takes seriously Newman’s insight that ‘God has created me to do him some definite service,’ then a greater number discover their call to the priesthood and religious life.”

A&B Vocations Director is Fr Paul Turner runs a number of vocations evenings and retreats. For more information see: Three new priests for Arundel and Brighton
