Archbishop Mauro Piacenza to lead Congregation for Clergy

Pope Benedict has appointed Italian Archbishop Mauro Piacenza as Prefect for the Congregation for the Clergy, the Vatican department which supervises priests around the world. He succeeds Brazillian Cardinal Claudio Hummes who is retiring.

Born in 1944, the new prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy, was number two in the office since 2007. A lawyer by training, he comes from the diocese of Genoa, where he was chaplain of the University, Judge of the Diocesan Court. He also taught contemporary culture and history of atheism in the Diocesan Theological Institute for Laity.

He began serving in the Congregation for the Clergy in 1990. the "ministry" of the pope in charge of priests around the world. Moreover, from 2003 to 2007 he chaired the Committee for Cultural Heritage of the Church.

Archbishop Piacenza was the main architect of the Year of Priests. Through numerous messages and homilies, he worked to guide the priests of tomorrow, inspired by the Cure of Ars.
