Pope: 'without love, whatever we do is meaningless'

"Without love, even the most important activities lose value and fail to bring joy. Without profound meaning, whatever we do is simply activism, fruitless and haphazard. And who gives Love and Truth if not Jesus Christ?": the Holy Father, Benedict XVI, said, before reciting the Angelus with visitors gathered in the courtyard of his summer residence at Castel Gandolfo, on Sunday.

Reflecting on the Sunday Gospel, in which Jesus visits the home of Martha and Mary, (Lk 10,38-42), the Pope recalled that summer time, with a period of rest, "is an opportune moment for giving first place to what is effectively most important in life, that is to say, listening to the Word of God", we learn this from the conversation between the Lord and Martha, fully occupied with welcoming the illustrious guest while her sister Mary simply sits at the feet of Jesus and listens to him.

"Christ's words are clear - the Pope said - " there is no scorn for active life, and certainly no scorn for generous hospitality; instead a firm reminder that the only thing, really necessary, is other: listening to the Word of the Lord; and the Lord, at that moment was there, present in the Person of Jesus! Everything else will pass away, it will be taken from us, but the Word of God is eternal and gives meaning to our daily activity."
