Catholic fund gives over £900,000 to London projects

The St John Southworth Fund has awarded 96 grants to the value of £905,000 in 2009-2010 to help those in need in London boroughs including the homeless, migrants and refugees, children, youth education, disability support, pastoral support for the elderly, and other projects in the Diocese of Westminster.

Set up in 2007, to date the Fund has awarded over £1.2million towards projects and individuals throughout Greater London.

Grants include: £10,000 to Our Lady of Hal church in Camden Town, for night shelter and facilities for the homeless; £10,000 to the Cardinal Hume Centre for their advice service to asylum seekers, refugees and migrants; £4,900 to Bromley Welcare for their Family Support Work project; £4,000 to Peckham Churches Action Network for their 121 Foodbank; and Uniform grants to two families.

Funds are available to provide help to the poor and needy in all 33 London boroughs, in accordance with the wishes of the original benefactors. These boroughs lie in the Catholic dioceses of Brentwood, Southwark and Westminster. There is also specific
provision to support charitable activities in the boroughs of Hackney, Haringey, Tower Hamlets and Islington. Limited funds are available for parishes in Westminster Diocese outside the London boroughs.
