While some people are giving up things for Lent, a group of pupils at a St Albans’ school have been working extra hard to create an Easter artwork.

The gifted pupils at Nicholas Breakspear Catholic School have spent their lunchtimes, evenings and weekends painting a Stations of the Cross art display.

The Stations of the Cross depict the final hours of Jesus’ life, leading up to his crucifixion, and are used as a catalyst for prayer and reflection.

The 14 canvasses show thought-provoking images, created using a mixture of oil paints, acrylics and watercolours. Twelve pupils aged between 12 and 18 (and two teachers) worked on the project.

The paintings will be displayed at SS Alban and Stephen RC Church in Beaconsfield Road, which donated the canvasses, and then will be hung permanently in the school’s foyer.

Mrs Anna Borrill, head of art, said: “We are very proud of Nicholas Breakspear’s own Stations of the Cross. They are a really high-quality, stunning, individual piece of work. They will provide a focal point for worship and reflection within the school for years to come.”
