Liverpool: Health Secretary to address Catholic healthcare workers

'Having Faith in the NHS. What have we got to offer?' is the title of an address to be given by the Secretary of State for Health and Leigh MP, Andy Burnham, to healthcare workers in the Gibberd Room of the Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King, Liverpool, this Sunday, 18 October. Following the address, Mass will be celebrated by Auxiliary Bishop, Tom Williams, to support and pay tribute to the work done by healthcare professionals and volunteers working with the Catholic Church in the Merseyside area.

The address which begins at 2.30pm and Mass are open to all, especially those who work in the healthcare sector and those who wish to show their gratitude and support for them in prayer. The celebration takes place on the Feast of St Luke, traditionally the Patron Saint of doctors and healthcare workers. Organised by Hospital Chaplains and the Catholic Medical Association the event is to be the first in a regular series highlighting the work of care being carried out by those within the Church and the Health Service.

Following the address the Health Minister will respond to questions from the audience before a break during which those present can view an exhibition of some of the resources available for healthcare workers through Catholics in Healthcare. The Mass will then be celebrated at 4.30pm.

Bishop Tom Williams, Auxiliary Bishop of Liverpool, and Chair of the Bishops' Conference Healthcare Reference Group, said: "This is the first of what I hope will be an annual event at which people can say 'thank you' to all those involved in healthcare in every discipline. It will be an opportunity to show support and offer partnership to those working in the NHS."
