Cuba: suspect arrested for murder of priest

Source: Fides

A suspect has been arrested and detained in Cuba in connection with the killing of a Catholic priest last week. A Church spokesman said police investigations led to the arrest and a suspect has confessed to the crime.

Father Mariano Arroyo Merino, Spanish parish priest of the "Santuario Nacional de Nuestra Señora di Regla" Church in Havana, was found dead on Monday morning in his home. He had worked in Cuba for more than a decade.

The Archbishop's office said the police were also still investigating the murder of Father Eduardo La Fuente last February in a north-western suburb of Havana.

He added that the Cuban Church firmly refused "to connect one case to the other, or to link the crimes to religious or political factors".

The Archbishop's office in conclusion reiterated that such crimes "are uncommon" in Cuba.
The Archbishop of Havana, Cardinal Jaime Ortega Alamino, presided over the funeral of Fr Arroyo yesterday in Havana Cathedral. His body was then flown back to Spain for burial.
