Most Rev Vincent Nichols is new Archbishop of Westminster


Pope Benedict has appointed the Archbishop of Birmingham, the Most Rev Vincent Nichols, as the new Archbishop of Westminster. The announcement was made this morning at a press conference in Archbishops House. Further details to follow soon.

Archbishop Vincent Nichols MA, MEd STL, was born Vincent Gerard Nichols, in Crosby, Liverpool, on 8 November 1945. His parents, Henry and Mary, were teachers. He studied at St Mary's College in Crosby, from 1956 -1963. He then entered the Venerable English College in Rome. He was ordained priest on 21 December 1969. He obtained a Licentiate in Sacred Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University, and a Master of Arts degree from the University of Manchester, specialising in the theology of Saint John Fisher.

Archbishop Vincent was ordained bishop by Cardinal Hume on 24 January 1992. He was Auxiliary Bishop in North London from 1992 - 2000.

He was installed as Ninth Bishop and Eighth Archbishop of Birmingham on 29 March 2000

Before his appointment as an Auxiliary Bishop to Cardinal Hume in 1992, Bishop Vincent was General Secretary of the Bishops' Conference of England and Wales.

In addition to his pastoral oversight of the Archdiocese of Birmingham, Archbishop Nichols is Chairman of the Department for Catholic Education and Formation of the Bishops' Conference and Chairman of the Catholic Education Service (CES)

He represented the European bishops at the November 1998 Synod of Bishops from Oceania and attended the Synod of Bishops for Europe in September 1999.

He has written two books to date: 'Promise of Future Glory', and Missioners' published in the United Kingdom by Alive Publishing; and in the United States by Twenty Third Publications under the title 'The Gift of the Mass'.
