London: Jews and Christians in peace vigil

Pax Christi members and others are joining British Friends of Peace Now to express solidarity with the Peace Coalition in Israel. A spokeswoman said: "At a time of extreme tension in the Middle East, many British Jews are joining like-minded Israelis to demand an end to violence and a restoration of the peace process. We are holding a public demonstration near the Israeli Embassy, using the symbolism of the sukkah - a tabernacle for peace - to make our voices heard. Peace may be a fragile commodity, but it is infinitely more precious than oil or water for all the peoples of the Middle East, be they Jewish, Muslim or Christian. In the spirit of the autumnal harvest festival of Sukkot, we hope that it is not too late to harvest the fruits of the peace process, and rebuild a shelter in which Israelis and Palestinians can speak and dwell together." The vigils will be held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of this week (17, 18 and 19 October), on Kensington High Street, 7pm - 9pm. For more information contact Vivien Lichtenstein at British Friends of Peace Now on 020 7286 5614.
