Apostolic administrator for Cardiff

Pope John Paul II has appointed the Rt Rev Edwin Regan, Bishop of Wrexham, to be Apostolic Administrator for the Catholic Archdiocese of Cardiff. A statement issued by the Catholic Media Office on Monday said the position would be a temporary appointment to provide episcopal governance for the diocese while the current archbishop, the Most Rev John Aloysius Ward OFMCap, was convalescing from a deep vein thrombosis which he suffered in November. Bishop Regan was born in Port Talbot, West Glamorgan, in 1935. He was ordained a priest of the Cardiff Archdiocese in 1959. In 1994, he was ordained Bishop of Wrexham, in north Wales. While Apostolic Administrator of Cardiff, he remains Bishop of Wrexham. The statement said: "This appointment does not affect the statement made by Archbishop Ward on 5 November, in which he announced his intention to request a Coadjutor (assistant) bishop."
