Prayers as medieval remains laid to rest

An ecumenical service was held in Hull, Yorkshire, on Sunday, for more than 250 people who died during medieval times. The Anglican Bishop of Hull led prayers and the Catholic Bishop of Middlesbrough, the Rt Rev John Crowley gave a blessing at the service. The Carmelite Provincial, Fr Piet Wijngaard, O'Carm, the Augustinian Provincial, Fr Paul Graham OSA were also among those present. The remains were found by the Humber Archaeology Partnership during a five-year excavation on the site of an Augustinian friary. A new school and court buildings will now be built on the land. The discovery was one of the largest groups of ancient skeletons ever found in Britain and is revealing fascinating insights into medieval life. The remains have been placed in a crypt rather than buried to enable forensic archaeologists to carry out further research.
